NextEra Energy Closes Up to $1.9 Billion Federal Loan to Restart Duane Arnold Nuclear Plant in Iowa

NextEra Energy, Inc. (NEE) has finalized a U.S. Department of Energy loan facility of up to $1.9 billion to support the recommissioning of the Duane Arnold Energy Center, a nuclear plant in Iowa that was shuttered in 2020, according to a company announcement covered widely by national outlets.

The financing, closed with the DOE, is intended to fund work required to bring the single-unit nuclear facility back online. Duane Arnold, located near Palo, Iowa, ceased operations several years ago, and its restart has drawn attention as one of the more notable efforts to return a retired U.S. reactor to service.

The project also carries a corporate dimension: Google has a power arrangement tied to the plant’s revival, linking the restart to the growing electricity needs of data centers. Large technology companies have increasingly turned to nuclear energy as a firm, around-the-clock power source to match continuous data-center demand.

Nuclear restarts differ from new construction in that they leverage existing infrastructure — the reactor, transmission interconnection, and site permitting history — which can shorten timelines compared with building from the ground up. Still, recommissioning requires regulatory review, equipment refurbishment, and workforce rebuilds, all of which the DOE loan is designed to help finance.

For NextEra, the deal adds a nuclear-restart project to a portfolio historically centered on regulated utility operations through Florida Power & Light and one of the country’s largest wind and solar fleets. The company’s shares traded at $84.24, up 0.89% from the prior close of $83.50, valuing the utility at roughly $175.6 billion.

The loan facility was announced under the current administration and reported by Reuters, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and other outlets, underscoring broad interest in federal support for nuclear energy capacity.

What to watch

  • Regulatory milestones for Duane Arnold’s return to service, including Nuclear Regulatory Commission approvals
  • Updates on the restart timeline and capital spending in NextEra’s upcoming earnings reports
  • Further details on the power purchase arrangement with Google tied to the plant
  • Any additional DOE financing announcements for nuclear recommissioning projects
