NextEra Energy Secures $1.9 Billion Federal Loan to Restart Iowa’s Duane Arnold Nuclear Plant

NextEra Energy Secures $1.9 Billion Federal Loan to Restart Iowa’s Duane Arnold Nuclear Plant

The U.S. Department of Energy has closed a loan of up to $1.9 billion to support the restart of the Duane Arnold Energy Center, the shuttered nuclear facility in Iowa owned by NextEra Energy, according to multiple outlets including the Wall Street Journal and Reuters.

The loan marks one of the more prominent federal financing efforts aimed at returning an idled nuclear plant to service. Duane Arnold, located near Palo, Iowa, ceased operations in 2020, and its planned restart would restore roughly 600 megawatts of carbon-free baseload generation to the regional grid — power that operates continuously regardless of weather conditions, unlike wind or solar, which can face curtailment when supply exceeds demand.

For NextEra, the country’s largest utility-scale renewable developer through its NextEra Energy Resources arm, the deal adds nuclear capacity alongside a portfolio heavy in wind and solar. The company, which also operates regulated utility Florida Power & Light, trades at $84.21, up 0.85% on the day, with a market capitalization of roughly $175.6 billion.

The financing comes through the Department of Energy’s loan programs office, which has historically backed large energy infrastructure projects, including advanced nuclear and clean energy deployments. Restarting a previously operating plant is generally viewed as less technically complex than new construction, since the site, transmission interconnection, and licensing framework already exist — though recommissioning still requires Nuclear Regulatory Commission review and significant equipment restoration.

The move reflects growing commercial and policy interest in extending the lives of existing nuclear assets amid rising electricity demand from data centers and electrification. Several other idled plants, including Three Mile Island Unit 1 in Pennsylvania, are also being pursued for restarts under agreements with large power buyers.

Timeline details, the final drawn amount of the loan, and projected in-service dates for Duane Arnold were not specified in the initial announcements.

What to watch

  • Nuclear Regulatory Commission filings and approvals related to the Duane Arnold restart
  • NextEra’s upcoming earnings calls for capital expenditure guidance tied to the project
  • Milestones on the loan disbursement schedule from the Department of Energy
  • Announcements on power purchase agreements for the plant’s output
