NextEra Energy Lands $1.9 Billion Federal Loan to Bring Iowa’s Duane Arnold Nuclear Plant Back Online

NextEra Energy has secured a $1.9 billion loan from the federal government to support the recommissioning of the Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa, according to a report by kwwl.com. The financing marks a significant step in one of the highest-profile efforts in the United States to return a shuttered nuclear facility to service.

Duane Arnold, a single-unit nuclear plant, was retired in 2020 after operating for roughly 45 years. Restarting a previously decommissioned reactor is uncommon, and the project will require regulatory review and substantial infrastructure work before the unit can rejoin the grid. Federal loan support of this size underscores the scale of capital needed to restore nuclear assets, which provide large volumes of always-available, carbon-free generation.

For NextEra, the move adds a nuclear dimension to a portfolio historically anchored in two businesses: Florida Power & Light, its regulated utility, and NextEra Energy Resources, one of the largest developers of wind and solar generation in North America. The company has been among the most active builders of renewables capacity, though its fleet has also contended with challenges such as curtailment — when grid operators scale back output from wind or solar because supply exceeds immediate demand. Nuclear baseload output, by contrast, typically runs around the clock.

Shares of NextEra Energy traded at $83.83, up 0.4% from the prior close of $83.50, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $175.6 billion. The utility-sector company is one of the largest power producers in North America by retail and wholesale customers served.

The loan comes amid renewed federal and commercial interest in nuclear generation, driven in part by growing electricity demand from data centers and electrification. Several retired or at-risk nuclear units across the country have been the subject of restart studies in recent years, though few have advanced as far as securing project-level financing.

Timelines for regulatory approvals and construction milestones at Duane Arnold remain subject to federal oversight, and NextEra has not disclosed in the reported coverage how the loan will be structured across project phases.
