NextEra Energy Lines Up $1.9 Billion Federal Loan Backing for Duane Arnold Nuclear Restart
NextEra Energy has secured a loan guarantee of up to $1.9 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy to support the recommissioning of the Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa, according to a report by Pulse 2.0. The facility, which shut down in 2020, would rejoin the small group of retired U.S. nuclear units being evaluated or pursued for restart as power demand grows.
Duane Arnold, a single-unit nuclear plant in Palo, Iowa, ceased operations ahead of schedule after storm damage to its cooling infrastructure. Restarting a retired reactor is a complex undertaking involving Nuclear Regulatory Commission review, equipment refurbishment, and grid interconnection work — areas where federal financing can materially reduce the cost of capital for the project.
The DOE loan guarantee falls under federal programs designed to lower financing costs for nuclear and other clean-energy infrastructure. Such support is significant for a restart project, where upfront spending is substantial and the return depends on the plant returning to service and securing long-term revenue.
For NextEra Energy, the move adds a nuclear recommissioning effort to a portfolio already spanning regulated utility Florida Power & Light and one of the country’s largest renewable generation fleets. The company’s shares traded at $82.70 on the session, down 1.51% from the prior close of $83.97, valuing the utility at roughly $175.6 billion.
Nuclear restarts have gained renewed attention as data-center-driven electricity demand and grid reliability concerns sharpen interest in firm, carbon-free generation. Because nuclear plants run at very high capacity factors, a returning unit can supply steady baseload output that complements variable wind and solar resources — a relevant consideration in Iowa, a major wind-producing state where curtailment, or the deliberate reduction of renewable output when supply exceeds demand, can occur.
The restart remains subject to regulatory approvals and construction milestones, and timelines for recommissioning projects of this kind typically span several years.
