Shearwater and SLB Kick Off 3D Seismic Acquisition Offshore Brazil’s Equatorial Margin

Seismic contractor Shearwater GeoServices and SLB have begun a three-dimensional seismic survey in Brazil’s Equatorial Margin, with acquisition taking place near the Morpho discovery, according to a report from Offshore Magazine.

The Equatorial Margin, a stretch of offshore basins running along Brazil’s northern coast, has drawn growing attention from explorers in recent years following a series of promising well results. The region’s geology is often compared to the conjugate margin of West Africa, where several major hydrocarbon discoveries have been made. Seismic data acquisition — the process of mapping subsurface rock layers using sound waves — is typically a precursor to exploration drilling, helping operators identify potential reservoirs and reduce drilling risk.

Surveys of this kind are a core part of the upstream value chain: 3D seismic imaging allows geoscientists to build detailed pictures of structures thousands of meters below the seabed before committing to the considerable expense of drilling in deepwater environments. A survey positioned close to an existing discovery such as Morpho suggests operators are looking to delineate the extent of known finds and evaluate adjacent prospects.

SLB, formerly known as Schlumberger, is one of the world’s largest oilfield services providers, spanning reservoir characterization, drilling, and production technologies. The company’s shares traded at $57.10 in recent dealings, up 0.18% from the prior close of $57.00, valuing the business at roughly $84.74 billion.

Shearwater, a pure-play seismic acquisition specialist, operates a fleet of survey vessels for oil and gas clients globally. Partnerships between seismic contractors and larger service companies have become a common model for complex deepwater acquisition programs, combining vessel capacity with subsurface interpretation expertise.

Brazil’s national oil company and international explorers have been steadily expanding activity along the Equatorial Margin, though licensing and permitting in the region remain subjects of ongoing public debate and regulatory review. New seismic programs add to the technical dataset available in the basins, which historically have seen comparatively limited exploration compared with Brazil’s prolific pre-salt province to the south.

What to watch

  • Completion timelines for the seismic survey and subsequent data processing milestones
  • Exploration drilling plans announced by operators in the Equatorial Margin basins
  • Brazil’s regulatory calendar for licensing rounds affecting the region
  • SLB’s upcoming quarterly earnings report for commentary on exploration services activity
