Federal Loan Backs Restart of Shuttered Iowa Nuclear Plant Tied to Google Power Deal

A $1.9 billion federal loan is set to help bring a shuttered nuclear power plant in Iowa back online, according to multiple reports including TechCrunch, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. The financing was arranged through the U.S. Department of Energy and involves NextEra Energy, the utility company operating the facility, which has a data-center power arrangement with Google.

The deal stands out as one of the more closely watched efforts to revive retired nuclear capacity in the United States. Restarting a previously operating reactor — rather than building new — can, in principle, shorten the timeline to delivering firm, around-the-clock generation, a trait that has become increasingly valuable to technology companies seeking reliable electricity for data centers. Nuclear plants, unlike wind and solar facilities, are not subject to curtailment, the practice of reducing output when supply exceeds demand on the grid.

NextEra Energy, which operates through its Florida Power & Light utility and its NextEra Energy Resources clean-energy arm, is one of the largest power generators in North America. The company’s stock traded at $82.70 on the day of the reports, down 1.51% from a prior close of $83.97, giving it a market capitalization of roughly $175.6 billion.

The loan follows a broader pattern of hyperscale technology companies contracting directly with nuclear operators to secure long-term power supplies. Google’s involvement in the Iowa project mirrors similar arrangements announced across the sector in recent years, as data-center electricity demand has climbed rapidly. Government loan support, meanwhile, signals continued federal interest in extending the operating lives of existing nuclear assets, which supply a significant share of the nation’s carbon-free electricity.

The Iowa plant will still need to clear regulatory and technical hurdles before returning to service, including Nuclear Regulatory Commission review and plant refurbishment work. Details on the exact restart timeline and the structure of the power purchase agreement with Google were not fully disclosed in the reports.

What to watch

  • NextEra Energy’s upcoming quarterly earnings call, where management may provide updated timelines and cost estimates for the restart.
  • Nuclear Regulatory Commission approvals and inspection milestones for the Iowa facility.
  • Further disclosure of the terms of Google’s power purchase agreement, including duration and pricing.
  • Any additional federal loan announcements tied to nuclear restarts or life extensions at other U.S. plants.
