Fuel Cell Stocks Slide as AI Data Center Power Trade Cools Ahead of Bloom Energy’s S&P 500 Entry

Shares of Bloom Energy fell 6.68% to $257.65 on the day, retreating from the previous close of $276.10, as investor enthusiasm around the artificial intelligence power-generation trade showed signs of fading. The pullback comes just days before the solid oxide fuel cell maker is set to join the S&P 500 index.

Bloom Energy, which designs and installs on-site fuel cell systems capable of running on natural gas, biogas, or hydrogen, has been among the companies drawing attention as data center operators seek alternatives to grid power for energy-hungry AI infrastructure. The company currently carries a market capitalization of roughly $83.2 billion and is classified in the industrials sector under electrical equipment and parts.

Peers in the fuel cell space also moved lower. FuelCell Energy declined 6.11% to $16.57 from a prior close of $17.65, leaving its market cap near $1.32 billion. Plug Power, by contrast, bucked the trend, rising 4.67% to $2.26 from a previous close of $2.16, with a market capitalization of approximately $3.16 billion.

Context: Fuel Cells and the AI Power Demand Story

Fuel cell systems generate electricity electrochemically rather than through combustion, allowing for on-site, distributed generation — an increasingly discussed option for data centers that need large volumes of reliable power and cannot wait for grid interconnection. Bloom’s Energy Server platform, its flagship product, converts fuel such as natural gas or hydrogen directly into electricity at the customer’s site.

The sector’s recent volatility reflects the swift swings that have characterized stocks tied to data center power demand. Bloom’s pending inclusion in the S&P 500 — the widely tracked large-cap benchmark — is a milestone that typically compels index funds holding the index to purchase shares of the added company, while sentiment shifts in the underlying theme can still move the stock sharply in the interim.

Monday’s session underscored that divergence: two of the three major fuel cell names sold off while Plug Power moved higher, suggesting investors are not trading the group as a single block.

What to watch

  • Bloom Energy’s formal addition to the S&P 500 and the index-related trading flows surrounding the effective date.
  • Upcoming quarterly earnings and guidance from Bloom Energy, FuelCell Energy, and Plug Power for updates on data center order pipelines.
  • Announcements of new on-site power contracts with data center operators or hyperscalers.
  • Broader trading patterns in AI-linked power stocks, which have driven much of the sector’s recent price action.
