NextEra Energy Secures $1.9 Billion Federal Loan to Restart Duane Arnold Nuclear Plant in Iowa
The U.S. Department of Energy has finalized a $1.9 billion loan guarantee to NextEra Energy, clearing the way for the recommissioning of the Duane Arnold Energy Center, a nuclear plant in Iowa that has been offline since its original shutdown years ago. The financing marks one of the most prominent examples of renewed federal support for returning retired nuclear capacity to the grid.
Duane Arnold, located near Cedar Rapids, was once Iowa’s only operating nuclear facility. Restarting a retired reactor is a complex undertaking, involving inspections, equipment refurbishment, and regulatory review by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Federal loan backing reduces the financing burden on the company as it works through that process, which typically spans multiple years before a plant can rejoin the grid.
The project fits into a broader pattern of interest in nuclear recommissioning across the United States. Rising electricity demand — driven in part by data-center growth and electrification — has prompted several utilities and independent power producers to re-examine shuttered nuclear sites, since existing grid interconnections and licensed infrastructure can shorten the path to adding firm, low-carbon generation compared with building new capacity.
For NextEra, the loan comes as the company continues to operate through its Florida Power & Light regulated utility segment and its NextEra Energy Resources clean-energy business. In market trading, NextEra shares closed at $82.70, down 1.51% from the prior close of $83.97, leaving the company with a market capitalization of roughly $175.6 billion. The stock’s move on the day reflects broader market activity rather than any single project announcement.
The Department of Energy’s loan programs office has historically supported large energy infrastructure, and the Duane Arnold guarantee signals continued federal engagement with nuclear restarts under current law. The precise timeline for the plant’s return to service will depend on regulatory approvals and completion of restoration work at the site.
