SLB Tapped for Invictus Energy’s Musuma-1 Well in Zimbabwe

Invictus Energy has contracted oilfield services giant SLB to support its upcoming Musuma-1 exploration well in Zimbabwe, a milestone in the company’s efforts to appraise petroleum prospects in the Cabora Bassa basin. The deal puts the global oilfield services leader — which provides drilling, evaluation, and well construction technology — at the center of one of southern Africa’s more closely watched frontier exploration programs.

Musuma-1 is the next step in Invictus’ drilling campaign in northern Zimbabwe, where earlier wells have targeted Permian-aged reservoirs in a basin geologically analogous to productive Karoo systems elsewhere in southern Africa. Engaging SLB, one of the largest service contractors in the industry by market value, signals the scale of technical capability Invictus is bringing to a frontier jurisdiction where modern upstream activity remains limited.

The contract also reflects the broader pattern of frontier exploration: junior explorers often pair with major service providers to access drilling rigs, logging-while-drilling technology, and subsurface evaluation expertise that would be costly to assemble independently. Service contractors, in turn, gain exposure to emerging basins that could see expanded activity if exploration succeeds.

Neither company’s shares reacted materially to the announcement in Thursday trading. DTI closed at $2.61, flat on the day, with a market capitalization of roughly $92.1 million. SLB traded up slightly at $57.10, up 0.18% from its prior close of $57.00, valuing the company at approximately $84.7 billion.

Zimbabwe has sought to attract petroleum investment as part of a broader push to develop its natural resource base, and Invictus holds one of the country’s most prominent exploration licenses. The Musuma-1 campaign will offer a fresh dataset on a basin that has seen relatively little modern drilling, with results likely to shape expectations for follow-up appraisal work in the license area.

For SLB, the award adds to a portfolio of international projects across Africa and other frontier regions, where the services company provides contracting and equipment for both conventional and unconventional campaigns. Contract values and scope details for the Musuma-1 work were not broken out in the announcement.
