Enphase Targets AI Data Center Power Market with U.S.-Manufactured IQ SST Modules

Enphase Energy, a company best known for the semiconductor-based microinverters that convert solar power at the individual panel level, is expanding its footprint into a very different corner of the electricity market: artificial intelligence data centers. The company has unveiled its IQ SST (solid-state transformer) modules, which it says will be built domestically in the United States.

Solid-state transformers differ from conventional iron-and-copper transformers by using power electronics to convert and condition electricity, allowing faster response times and more precise voltage control — characteristics that matter in facilities where racks of AI processors create large, rapidly fluctuating loads. As hyperscale data center construction accelerates, equipment vendors capable of supplying domestic, grid-interface hardware are drawing attention from developers seeking to shorten supply chains.

The move represents a notable diversification for Enphase, whose core business remains residential solar and home energy systems. The company’s shares traded at $36.72 in the most recent session, down 5.75% from the prior close of $38.96, leaving the company with a market capitalization of roughly $5.16 billion.

For a company classified in the solar industry, the data center announcement signals an effort to broaden revenue exposure beyond residential solar installations, a market that has experienced uneven demand in recent periods as interest rates and policy shifts have affected household adoption of photovoltaic systems. Selling power-conversion and transformer hardware to commercial-scale customers would put Enphase in closer competition with electrical equipment manufacturers rather than solely with rooftop solar rivals.

Domestic manufacturing is a recurring theme in the power sector, as federal incentives and procurement preferences have encouraged companies to build grid-related hardware on U.S. soil. Enphase did not, in the announcement cited, detail the timing of production ramps or identify customers for the new modules.

What to watch

  • Enphase’s next quarterly earnings report, for management commentary on IQ SST production timelines and any disclosed customer commitments.
  • Orders or pilot deployments tied to U.S. data center projects.
  • Guidance on how much of Enphase’s manufacturing capacity will shift toward the new product line.
  • Broader announcements from competitors in solid-state power conversion as the AI-driven demand cycle continues.
