IEA’s Birol: Electricity Demand Growth Outpacing Overall Energy Use as Investment Flows Hold

Global investment in electrification remains intact despite ongoing debate about how artificial intelligence may reshape power consumption, according to Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Speaking at a news conference in Seoul on Thursday, Birol argued that the shift toward electricity as the backbone of the world’s energy system continues to attract capital at a pace unmatched by other segments of the energy economy.

Birol highlighted the structural imbalance in growth rates: electricity demand is expanding roughly three times faster than total energy demand, a dynamic that helps explain why utilities, grid operators, and power-generation developers have remained favored destinations for investment capital. In other words, even if overall energy consumption grows modestly, the electricity share of that consumption is rising steadily — a trend that touches everything from upstream producers supplying gas-fired generation to midstream infrastructure feeding power plants.

The IEA chief’s remarks were reported by Reuters and come amid heightened scrutiny of AI-driven data center growth, which has raised questions in some quarters about whether surging computational demand could strain grids or upend long-standing demand forecasts. Birol’s message was that electrification is not a passing theme but a durable one, “firmly anchored” in capital markets.

For investors tracking the electrification theme across the energy value chain, listed companies with exposure to energy transport and logistics are one angle of participation. Insperity-listed tankers operator INSW — more precisely, INSW, which trades at $104.85, up 0.51% from its previous close of $104.31, with a market capitalization of approximately $5.19 billion — is among the midstream-adjacent names watched by readers following capital flows in the sector.

Birol did not detail specific regional forecasts in the remarks carried by Reuters, but his comments position electricity — rather than any single fuel — as the central story of current energy investment cycles. That framing matters for downstream consumers, grid planners, and fuel suppliers alike, since faster electricity growth can alter demand trajectories for natural gas, renewables capacity, and nuclear output simultaneously.

What to watch

  • Upcoming IEA publications and updates on global electricity demand and investment trends.
  • Data center power-purchase announcements from utilities and technology companies, which can signal demand growth.
  • Quarterly earnings from electricity-exposed energy companies, including grid and midstream operators.
  • Any follow-up remarks from IEA leadership on how AI-related load is being incorporated into official demand projections.
