Monet From Schlumberger Family Collection Heads to Sotheby’s Auction Block

A Claude Monet painting that has never been shown publicly will go up for auction at Sotheby’s, consigned by heirs of the family behind SLB — the oilfield services giant historically known as Schlumberger, Bloomberg reported.

The Schlumberger name is synonymous with the energy industry. Founded nearly a century ago, the company built its business on wireline logging — the practice of lowering instruments into wells to measure rock formations — and grew into the world’s largest oilfield services provider. Its founding family’s private art collection has long been part of that legacy, and the decision by descendants to sell a never-exhibited work adds a cultural footnote to one of the sector’s most storied fortunes.

The consignment comes as SLB continues to navigate a mixed services environment. Shares traded at $57.10, up 0.18% from the prior close of $57.00, valuing the company at roughly $84.7 billion. The company’s revenue streams span upstream work — helping producers explore for and extract oil and gas — along with production management and, increasingly, digital and low-carbon offerings aimed at utilities and industrial customers.

Sotheby’s has not publicized an estimate in the materials cited by Bloomberg, and details on the painting’s provenance and timing remain limited in the initial report. High-profile sales from energy dynasties have drawn attention in recent years, as older collections assembled during the industry’s expansion decades pass to new generations.

For SLB itself, the auction is a matter of family history rather than corporate finance: the publicly traded company is separately managed, and proceeds from private art sales by heirs do not flow to the business. Still, the Schlumberger name remains embedded in the company’s identity, from its headquarters culture to its global workforce of engineers and geoscientists.

The sale also highlights the continuing intersection of the energy sector and the art market, where fortunes built in oil and gas — from the Rockefellers to the Getty family — have shaped museum collections and auction calendars for generations.

What to watch

  • Sotheby’s announcement of the auction date and any published pre-sale estimate for the Monet.
  • SLB’s upcoming quarterly earnings report and guidance on demand for its services across regions.
  • Further details on the painting’s provenance and exhibition history, if any, ahead of the sale.
