Macron Seeks Coordinated G7 Oil Stock Release Amid Tight European Supply
French President Emmanuel Macron said Friday that he will bring G7 nations together in the coming weeks to coordinate on oil market conditions, including stock levels, exports and production capacity, as Europe confronts supply disruptions and sharply higher fuel prices.
The move comes as European refiners face the loss of crude deliveries from Saudi Arabia and as diesel prices climb into record territory. France is separately working to secure diesel, jet fuel and natural gas supply for the coming months, according to statements reported by Oilprice.
Strategic reserves back on the agenda
A coordinated release of emergency oil stocks — crude or refined products held in government-controlled storage and deployed during supply shocks — has been used before to cushion markets. Macron indicated that tapping strategic reserves remains an option under discussion, noting that Europe retains levers beyond those available to the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Any decision would require alignment among G7 members, and the upcoming meetings are expected to focus on how national stockpiles, export policy and spare production capacity could be brought into a shared framework.
Natural gas demand in focus
Paris’s parallel effort to lock in diesel, jet fuel and natural gas supplies underscores how the crunch extends beyond crude. Elevated diesel prices ripple through the broader economy, since the fuel powers trucking, agriculture and construction across the continent.
Natural gas services providers are closely watched in this environment for signs of rising drilling and completions activity. Natural Gas Services Group (NGS) closed at $37.72 on Friday, up 2.15% from the previous close of $36.93, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $486.6 million. The company supplies rental compression equipment used in natural gas production, a segment that tracks upstream activity levels.
