NextEra Energy Secures $1.9 Billion Loan to Fund Iowa Nuclear Plant Restart
NextEra Energy has obtained a $1.9 billion loan to support the recommissioning of a nuclear power plant in Iowa, according to a report carried by the National Association of Manufacturers. The financing marks one of the more notable recent examples of a utility seeking to bring shuttered nuclear capacity back online.
Plant restarts have drawn growing attention across the U.S. power sector as electricity demand rises, driven in part by data-center expansion and electrification. Nuclear facilities offer around-the-clock, carbon-free generation, but recommissioning a retired unit typically requires extensive inspections, equipment replacement, and regulatory review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission before the unit can return to service.
The loan adds a significant financing commitment to NextEra Energy‘s portfolio. The company, one of the largest U.S. utilities by market capitalization at roughly $175.6 billion, operates through two main segments: Florida Power & Light, its regulated Florida utility, and NextEra Energy Resources, which owns a broad fleet of nuclear, wind, solar, and storage assets. Its regulated-electric business model means recovered project costs can flow through customer rates subject to regulatory approval, while the competitive generation segment sells power into wholesale markets.
NextEra’s shares traded at $82.70 in the latest session, down 1.51% from a prior close of $83.97. The broader utilities space was also under modest pressure, with National Grid (NGG) down 1.1% at $77.21.
Restart projects sit alongside other high-profile efforts in the industry to revive previously retired nuclear capacity, reflecting renewed interest in firm, low-emission generation. Such projects face meaningful execution hurdles, including supply-chain timelines for specialized components, workforce availability, and the detailed licensing path required before a unit can be connected back to the grid.
The financing structure — debt raised specifically for the restart — underscores the capital intensity of nuclear recommissioning, where upfront spending precedes any revenue from resumed operations.
