Two Decades On, GRID Alternatives Revisits the Home Where Its First Solar Array Went Up
Nonprofit solar installer GRID Alternatives marked a milestone this week, returning to the site of its very first residential solar installation — a project completed roughly 20 years ago — to reflect on how far distributed solar has come since that initial build.
The organization, which coordinates volunteer-driven photovoltaic (PV) installations for income-qualified households, has grown from a small pilot effort into one of the larger nonprofit solar installers in the United States. Its early projects relied on donated equipment and volunteer labor, a model that helped demonstrate that rooftop solar could serve communities often overlooked by the commercial market.
The anniversary comes at a moment of transition for the broader solar supply chain. Panel costs have fallen sharply over the past two decades, driven in part by manufacturing scale among companies such as First Solar, which produces thin-film PV modules for projects across the United States, India, France, Chile, and other markets. First Solar’s shares closed at $203.10 in recent trading, down 4.85% from the prior close of $213.45, valuing the company at roughly $23.1 billion.
While GRID Alternatives is not a publicly traded company, its work sits within the same residential and community-scale segment that module manufacturers and installers depend on for demand. Nonprofit and low-income programs — including those supported by state initiatives — have become a meaningful channel for residential solar adoption, complementing the commercial market.
Returning to its first client’s home, the organization highlighted the durability of the original array and the evolution of installation practices since the early 2000s, when residential PV was still a niche product. Today’s systems typically pair higher-efficiency modules with monitoring software and, increasingly, battery storage — equipment that did not exist at scale when the first panels went up.
Grid operators have also adapted, as rising amounts of rooftop and utility-scale generation raise questions about curtailment — the practice of reducing solar output when supply exceeds demand — and how distributed generation affects grid planning.
