Brookfield and NextEra Reportedly Plan $100 Billion Data Center Campus in Kentucky

A report from The Wall Street Journal says Brookfield and NextEra Energy are teaming up on one of the largest data center developments announced in the United States to date: a campus in Kentucky with an estimated price tag of $100 billion. The project underscores how quickly artificial intelligence-driven computing demand is reshaping the power sector, as hyperscale data centers require vast amounts of electricity and long-term energy supply arrangements.

Brookfield’s public market arm, Brookfield Infrastructure Partners affiliate Brookfield Infrastructure Corporation (BIPC), saw its shares trade at $36.39 on the day of the report, up 0.66% from the prior close of $36.15. The company carries a market capitalization of roughly $4.48 billion.

Brookfield, a global alternative asset manager, has been an aggressive investor in data center infrastructure and renewable power generation, positioning itself as both a landlord and power provider to the digital economy. NextEra Energy, one of the country’s largest utilities through Florida Power & Light and the world’s biggest generator of wind and solar power via its Energy Resources unit, has similarly pursued power purchase agreements and generation buildouts to serve large industrial and computing customers.

The convergence of these two players is notable for energy-market observers. Data center campuses of this scale — often measured in gigawatts of load — typically need dedicated generation, grid interconnection, and sometimes on-site or behind-the-meter power. Utilities and independent power producers have increasingly treated such campuses as anchor customers, which can justify new wind, solar, battery storage, and natural gas capacity. That dynamic has become a major theme across the power sector, influencing long-term demand forecasts for electricity at a time when grid operators in several regions are already reporting tightening capacity.

Kentucky’s selection would follow a broader pattern of data center investment moving into regions with available land, relatively low power costs, and growing transmission infrastructure. States across the Midwest and Southeast have competed for such projects, which bring significant construction activity and, in some cases, large permanent power loads that reshape regional grid planning.

Details on the project’s timeline, financing structure, and power sourcing were not immediately available in the initial report. Announcements of this size often span multiple phases over a decade or more, with capital deployed incrementally as tenants are secured.

What to watch

  • Confirmation and specifics from Brookfield and NextEra, including project phases, site location, and capital commitments
  • Power supply details — generation mix, grid interconnection plans, and any utility rate filings in Kentucky
  • Brookfield Infrastructure’s upcoming earnings call and any updated commentary on data center backlog and funding plans
  • NextEra Energy’s guidance updates on renewable backlogs tied to data center demand
