Cameco in the Spotlight as Uranium Discussion Heats Up in Canada

Uranium is finding its way back into mainstream Canadian conversation, and Cameco Corporation (NYSE: CCJ) is at the center of it. A recent feature in The Globe and Mail examined the Saskatchewan-based company’s position as uranium gains renewed attention from policymakers, utilities, and investors alike.

Cameco is one of the world’s largest uranium producers, supplying fuel for nuclear electricity generation across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The company operates through three segments: Uranium, which covers exploration, mining, milling, and sales; Fuel Services, which provides conversion and fuel fabrication products; and Westinghouse, the nuclear technology business Cameco holds a stake in following its 2023 acquisition alongside Brookfield.

Shares of CCJ traded at $92.80 in the latest session, up 1.87% from the previous close of $91.10. The company’s market capitalization stands at roughly $45.2 billion, placing it among the most valuable pure-play uranium names listed in North America.

The renewed interest in uranium comes as governments and utilities revisit nuclear power’s role in electricity grids. Nuclear generation offers dispatchable, low-emission baseload power, and several countries have announced plans to extend existing reactor lifetimes or build new capacity. That demand picture flows upstream to miners like Cameco, whose product sits at the start of the nuclear fuel cycle — a multi-step supply chain that also includes conversion, enrichment, and fabrication before uranium reaches a reactor.

For Cameco specifically, the Westinghouse segment adds a downstream dimension to the business, giving it exposure to reactor services and technology in addition to the commodity itself. That structure is relatively unusual among uranium producers, which are typically focused on mining and sales.

The Globe and Mail’s piece reflects a broader trend of financial media weighing uranium’s momentum, though coverage of the sector remains sensitive to nuclear policy debates that vary by jurisdiction.

What to watch

  • Cameco’s next quarterly earnings report, including production and sales volumes from its Uranium segment
  • Any updates on guidance for uranium deliveries and realized prices
  • Developments at Westinghouse, including backlog and new reactor project milestones
  • Contracting activity from nuclear utilities as fuel-cycle commitments are negotiated
