Enphase’s IQ Meter Collar Gains Approval From 80 Utilities in the U.S. and Canada

Enphase Energy said its IQ Meter Collar has now been approved by 80 utilities across the United States and Canada, a milestone the company says broadens where homeowners can install its residential solar and battery systems without costly electrical panel upgrades.

The IQ Meter Collar is a device that sits between the utility meter and a home’s main electrical panel, allowing solar-plus-storage installations on panels that might otherwise be too small to handle the added load. That matters in markets where older homes have limited panel capacity, and where replacing a panel can add significant cost and delay to a residential solar project.

Utility approval lists are a practical but important piece of the distributed-solar landscape. Because interconnection rules vary by jurisdiction, hardware generally must be accepted by each local utility before installers can deploy it at scale. Reaching 80 approvals suggests Enphase has been working through that patchwork of permitting and interconnection requirements across both countries.

For homeowners, the company positions the collar as a way to simplify installations and reduce upfront expenses tied to panel replacements, while keeping homes connected within utility requirements. For installers, a wider approved footprint can shorten sales cycles in markets where panel capacity has been a sticking point.

The announcement comes as the company’s shares traded at $36.72, down 5.75% from the prior close of $38.96, valuing the group at roughly $5.16 billion. Enphase, classified in the solar industry within the technology sector, is best known for its microinverters — semiconductor-based devices that convert direct current from individual solar panels into alternating current at the panel itself — and has been expanding into home batteries and energy management.

Residential solar installers have faced a choppy demand environment in recent quarters, with higher interest rates raising financing costs for homeowners and pressuring system sales across the industry. Product announcements that lower installation friction, such as panel-collaring hardware, are part of a broader push by solar suppliers to reduce soft costs — the non-hardware expenses like labor, permitting, and interconnection that make up a growing share of residential system prices.

The company did not specify in the release which utilities recently granted approvals or provide a timeline for additional jurisdictions.

What to watch

  • The count of utility approvals on Enphase’s published compatibility lists, which the company has been expanding over time.
  • Enphase’s upcoming quarterly earnings report, where management commentary on residential demand and installer activity will be the key factual signal.
  • Any guidance updates on new hardware rollouts and international market expansion.
