SLB Launches Large-Scale 3D Seismic Acquisition Campaign Offshore Brazil

Oilfield services giant SLB has begun a major three-dimensional (3D) seismic survey in Brazilian waters, according to a report carried by Yahoo Finance Singapore. The survey is aimed at mapping subsurface rock formations below the seabed, giving exploration and production companies detailed images that help identify potential drilling targets before costly wells are spudded.

3D seismic acquisition is a cornerstone of upstream exploration work. Vessels tow arrays of sound sources and receivers across a survey area, and the reflected signals are processed into detailed subsurface imagery. In offshore basins like those along Brazil’s continental margin — home to prolific pre-salt oil fields — such data is often a prerequisite for farm-in decisions, licensing rounds, and reservoir development planning.

The campaign underscores SLB’s continued presence in Latin America, where deepwater exploration activity has remained robust. Seismic contracts of this scale typically generate multi-month revenue streams for service providers and can support follow-on work in data processing, interpretation, and drilling services.

Investors tracking the company saw shares of SLB change hands at $57.10 in recent trading, up 0.18% from the prior close of $57.00. The company’s market capitalization stands at approximately $84.7 billion.

For SLB, seismic acquisition sits within its digital and data-focused business lines, a segment the company has emphasized as operators seek to squeeze more value from exploration budgets. Brazil’s national oil company and international partners have consistently ranked among the most active deepwater explorers globally, making the region a recurring venue for large geophysical programs.

The news arrives amid a broader backdrop of steady offshore spending, as operators balance near-term cash generation with longer-cycle exploration projects. Service companies with vessel capacity and processing capabilities have been positioned to benefit from that activity, though contract terms and day rates vary by region and scope.

What to watch

  • SLB’s upcoming quarterly earnings report, which may detail the contribution of seismic and digital revenue from Latin America.
  • Any announced survey completion timelines or follow-on contracts tied to the offshore Brazil program.
  • Updates from Brazilian operators on exploration drilling decisions that could stem from the new seismic data.
