NextEra’s $67 bln Dominion deal faces political backlash in Virginia, FT reports

Investing.com– NextEra Energy’s (NYSE:NEE) proposed $67 billion acquisition of Dominion Energy (NYSE:D) is facing growing political opposition in Virginia, raising hurdles for the largest U.S. utility deal, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has said she is “deeply sceptical” of the transaction and has intervened in the regulatory review, seeking measures to lower electricity bills, protect jobs and accelerate clean-energy development, the FT reported.

Other senior state officials and lawmakers have also opposed the deal, while a group of U.S. congressional Democrats has warned it could reduce competition and raise prices, the report said.

NextEra and Dominion have sought to ease concerns by extending about $2.2 billion in promised bill credits to four years and increasing a commitment to retain Dominion workers to five years, according to the FT.

The opposition comes as utility deals surge, with U.S. transactions reaching a record $205 billion in the first half of 2026, Deloitte data cited by the FT showed.
