Chevron & Shell Lead U.S. Gulf Oil Production Recovery After Hurricane

Published:

Chevron Corporation CVX and Shell plc SHEL are among the key companies resuming activities at the U.S. Gulf, with both companies reporting progress in returning workers to offshore platforms after Hurricane Isaias. Oil and gas producers in the U.S. Gulf are restoring offshore operations after the hurricane forced widespread production shutdowns and personnel evacuations. The recovery is significant for the U.S. energy market, given the Gulf’s contribution to domestic oil and natural gas production and the region’s concentration of offshore infrastructure and refining capacity.

Chevron Moves to Restore Full Production

Chevron, currently carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), is returning workers to its Gulf platforms and restoring full production after temporarily curbing output at five facilities ahead of the hurricane. The company had also initiated shutdown procedures at some of its operated offshore facilities as the storm approached while transporting non-essential personnel onshore as a precaution.

The recovery marks an important step toward normalizing Chevron’s Gulf operations following the weather-related disruption. The company also reported that its Pascagoula, MS, plant remained operational and sustained no storm-related damage. Maintaining operations at this onshore facility is particularly relevant because disruptions across the Gulf Coast can affect both oil production and refining activity.

Shell Resumes Offshore Activities After Storm Disruptions

Shell, currently flaunting a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), is also redeploying personnel to its offshore platforms as operations recover following Hurricane Isaias. Before the storm, the company had evacuated personnel and shut down production at its Mars, Olympus, Ursa, Vito and Appomattox assets. It had also moved non-essential personnel from its Stones asset.

Following the hurricane, Shell reported no storm damage to its Mars, Olympus, Ursa, Vito and Appomattox facilities. The absence of reported damage is encouraging for the company’s recovery efforts, as it reduces concerns about physical infrastructure damage at these key offshore assets. The return of personnel should help Shell resume normal activities, although the pace of recovery remains dependent on operational and safety assessments.

BP Also Restarts Production Across Gulf Platforms

BP p.l.c. BP is restarting production at its Na Kika and Thunder Horse platforms and returning non-essential personnel to its Argos, Atlantis and Mad Dog platforms. The company’s actions, alongside those of Chevron and Shell, reflect the broader recovery underway across the U.S. Gulf’s offshore energy industry.
