GE Vernova Highlights Spain’s Path to Reliable, Net-Zero Electricity

Published:

GE Vernova GEV is highlighting how Spain can transition toward a net-zero electricity system by 2050 without compromising power reliability or affordability. The company outlined four potential pathways for Spain’s electricity system, emphasizing the importance of balancing renewable energy expansion with grid modernization, energy storage and dependable power generation.

Spain generated nearly 57% of its electricity from renewable sources in 2025, with renewables expected to account for more than 80% by 2030. However, electricity demand is projected to increase approximately 60% by 2050. This combination of rising demand and greater reliance on variable renewable generation could require substantial investment in electricity infrastructure, flexible generation and technologies that maintain grid stability.

Grid Modernization Creates Long-Term Growth Opportunities

As renewable energy becomes a larger part of the electricity mix, utilities need stronger transmission networks, energy storage and flexible generation to manage fluctuations in supply and demand. GE Vernova’s businesses in power generation and electrification position it to compete for projects involving grid equipment, system stability and reliable electricity supply.

The company’s analysis also emphasizes that even renewable-heavy power systems need firm, dispatchable capacity when wind and solar generation is insufficient. This supports the broader need for a balanced electricity system, where renewable sources work alongside dependable generation and technologies that improve flexibility. Any commercial benefit for GE Vernova will depend on actual investment decisions and future contract awards.

Balancing Renewable Energy With Dependable Power

GE Vernova’s analysis evaluates four potential pathways for Spain: Business-as-Usual, Progressive, Pioneering and Lower-Carbon. Across these scenarios, wind and solar capacity could reach approximately 150-250 gigawatts (GW) by 2050. The different pathways reflect potential trade-offs involving infrastructure investment, system flexibility, affordability and emission reduction.

Even in scenarios with substantial renewable generation, the electricity system would require firm, dispatchable capacity to support supply when renewable output is low. The analysis indicates that 15–20% of total system capacity could need to remain firm and dispatchable in the most renewable-heavy pathways. Energy storage, nuclear power, hydrogen and carbon capture are among the options identified to support grid reliability and flexibility. These findings highlight the importance of a balanced energy mix rather than relying solely on renewable generation.

For GE Vernova, this trend is relevant to its power generation and electrification businesses. As utilities seek to ensure reliable electricity supplies while lowering emissions, they may increase investment in technologies that enhance grid performance and enable more flexible power generation.

Utilities Investing in Grid Reliability and Clean Energy

Along with GEV, other utility companies are also poised to benefit from the similar trends, as discussed below:

NextEra Energy NEE combines regulated electricity operations through Florida Power & Light with renewable energy generation and storage development through NextEra Energy Resources. Its investments in renewables and storage align with the broader need to integrate clean energy while maintaining reliable electricity supplies.

NextEra Energy Resources continues to expand its clean energy platform through contracted renewable, storage and transmission projects. NEER added 3.6 GW of new renewables and storage origination in the second quarter of 2026, including 2 GW of battery storage.

Duke Energy DUK operates regulated electric utilities and is investing in grid infrastructure and generation resources to meet changing customer demand. Its strategy of expanding electricity infrastructure while maintaining reliability aligns with the challenges highlighted in GE Vernova’s analysis.

Duke Energy continues to position its 2026-2030 investment plan of about $103 billion as the core driver of regulated rate base growth. In second-quarter 2026, management said the company is deploying more than $1 billion of capital per month as it expands generation and grid infrastructure across its regulated jurisdictions.

Southern Company SO operates regulated utilities and follows a diversified energy strategy that includes natural gas, nuclear power, renewables and energy storage. It is also investing in grid modernization, automation and transmission and distribution infrastructure to strengthen system reliability.

SO has approval for 10 GW of new generation capacity, including natural gas, battery storage and solar, alongside transmission expansion. Ongoing projects and additional solicitations in Alabama and Georgia could create opportunities for regulated investment beyond its current capital plan.
