3 Energy Dividend Stocks to Buy for More Than Oil Exposure

Published:

Energy stocks can appeal to investors who want regular income, especially when markets are unsettled. Attacks on Saudi energy facilities and threats to tankers in the Middle East have increased uncertainty about oil supplies, giving investors another reason to look closely at how companies earn cash and pay dividends.

Chevron CVX, Canadian Natural Resources CNQ and Kinder Morgan KMI,  are three dividend-paying energy stocks to buy. Their favorable ranks support the selection, while regular payouts add an income component to the investment case.

Oil Supplies Face Threats Despite Recovering Exports

Brent crude is around $110 a barrel, while U.S. crude is near $100. Attacks on Saudi energy facilities and ships near the Strait of Hormuz have raised fears of supply disruptions. Even if production continues, concerns that oil may not reach buyers can keep prices high.

Saudi oil exports have nevertheless recovered. They reached a five-month high in August despite lower production. Later shipping estimates suggested crude exports were nearing pre-war levels.

Delivering fuel remains a challenge. Restrictions on refined-fuel shipments and high shipping costs can squeeze refiners’ profits and raise costs for consumers. U.S. crude stockpiles also fell more than expected, adding to concerns about available supplies.

Why Look at Dividend Payers?

Higher crude prices can help oil producers earn more, but they do not benefit every energy business equally. Expensive shipping and feedstock can raise costs elsewhere in the industry. That makes company cash flow a more useful starting point than a broad bet on oil.

For dividend investors, the question is whether a company can cover its payout after funding its operations and necessary investment. Borrowing to maintain distributions would offer less comfort than paying them from cash the business generates.

Kinder Morgan, Chevron and Canadian Natural Resources give investors different ways to approach energy income. Their ability to fund dividends after covering operating costs and investment needs matters most. Steady cash generation can help support those payments when energy prices weaken.

Keep the Focus on Cash Flow

Oil prices could stay high if attacks continue or shipping faces more disruptions. A recovery in exports or easing of the conflict could bring prices down. With both outcomes possible, investors should avoid relying on a single oil-price forecast.

Established dividend payers can offer a more balanced approach. Their size, financial resources and ability to generate cash from different operations can help them navigate commodity-market swings while continuing to return capital to investors.

Against this backdrop, Kinder Morgan, Chevron and Canadian Natural Resources offer three different ways to participate in the energy market while maintaining an income focus.

3 Dividend Energy Stocks to Invest In

Chevron: Chevron’s integrated business spans oil and gas exploration, production, refining and chemicals, providing multiple sources of cash flow across market cycles. Its broad geographic presence across the United States, the Asia-Pacific, Africa, the Middle East and South America, together with its scale and financial strength, supports free cash flow generation and continued shareholder returns.

Chevron has maintained or raised its dividend for 90 years, underscoring a long track record of resilience. Its 3.1% yield exceeds both the sector and the S&P 500’s 1% average. A steady near-term earnings outlook, disciplined capital spending and continued efficiency gains should support the Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) company’s ability to sustain attractive shareholder payouts. Canadian Natural Resources: Canadian Natural Resources owns a large portfolio of long-life, low-decline assets producing light and heavy oil, bitumen, synthetic crude and natural gas. Its operations across Western Canada, the North Sea and offshore West Africa provide geographic and product diversification, while disciplined spending and a consistent focus on shareholder returns strengthen its appeal to income-oriented investors.

The #1 Ranked company has increased its dividend for 26 consecutive years, supported by operational efficiency and consistent earnings performance. Its current quarterly dividend of 62.50 Canadian cents equates to a 3.3% yield, comfortably ahead of the Zacks Oil/Energy sector average of 2.5%. A strong balance sheet and efficient capital deployment reinforce the sustainability of its shareholder returns.

Kinder Morgan: Kinder Morgan operates one of North America’s largest energy infrastructure networks, with 78,000 miles of pipelines and extensive storage assets. Its take-or-pay contracts across natural gas, refined products, crude oil and terminals generate relatively stable, fee-based cash flows, reducing sensitivity to short-term commodity-price swings and offering more defensive energy exposure during volatile market conditions.

The Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) company expects a dividend increase in 2026, which would mark its ninth consecutive annual raise. Its current payout of 29.75 cents per quarter results in a 3.5% yield. With demand for natural gas and LNG infrastructure rising, Kinder Morgan’s asset base positions it well for continued cash flow durability.
