Oil Stocks Rally as WTI Crude Price Tops $103: Devon Energy and Diamondback Energy Gain 5%, Occidental Petroleum Rises 3%

Published:

WTI crude crossing $103 has Permian producers sprinting past a slumping broader market, but the real question is whether Middle East tensions can keep oil in triple digits long enough to matter for Devon, Diamondback, and Occidental shareholders.

A fresh climb in crude is pushing Permian oil producers well ahead of the rest of the stock market. Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN | DVN Price Prediction) stock is up 5% to $51.64 in afternoon trading. That gain shows how directly the producer’s cash flow tracks the price of a barrel. Meanwhile, Diamondback Energy (NASDAQ:FANG) stock is rising 5% to $206.70, keeping pace with Devon stock.

Shares of Devon and Diamondback are outpacing the broader energy group. The SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (NYSEARCA:XOP) is up 3% to $203.48, a smaller advance. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is down 0.3% to $762.06, leaving oil producers on the winning side of a split market.

Iran Strike Worries Push Crude Into Triple Digits

Oil prices are climbing as Middle East risks persist, with concerns about renewed U.S. strikes on Iran adding a premium to every barrel. The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil price is up 3.56% over the past 24 hours to $103.01 per barrel. Crude oil’s climb has turned into a broad bid for U.S. upstream producers, with Devon and Diamondback shares among the biggest beneficiaries.

Spot crude broke through on October 15 with a jump to $104.71, then peaked at $110.01 on October 19. Diamondback’s management has tied the background to the Strait of Hormuz disruption, which it described as the largest supply shock in global oil market history. Rebuilding depleted global inventories, management argued, has structurally raised the floor for oil prices.

Permian Pure-Plays Outrun the Energy Fund

Devon enters this rally with extra leverage. Its Q2 2026 oil realizations averaged $88.09 per barrel while WTI averaged $92.47, and the latest spot reading sits well above that benchmark. Management’s Q3 2026 guidance calls for oil production of 550,000 to 560,000 barrels per day as the Coterra merger contributes a full quarter of combined results.

Diamondback is a Permian pure-play, with its drilling concentrated in the Midland Basin of West Texas. Kaes Van’t Hof was Diamondback’s chief executive then. On its Q2 call, he linked the oil outlook to depleted global inventories, stating “that gives us confidence that there’s a longer-term bid for oil to refill those inventories and meet global demand.” That view biases the company toward growing production, which increases its leverage to a higher crude price.

Fellow oil producer Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY) pairs its Permian core with assets in the Rockies, the Gulf of America, and the Middle East. Richard Jackson was Occidental’s chief executive then. On its August 6 call, he stated, “At higher prices, we have opportunities to add further value, both for the business and our shareholders.” OXY shares are up 3% to $64.61.

Oil’s volatility cuts both ways for Devon and Diamondback. WTI crude oil slipped to $85.23 on September 25, a reminder that triple-digit oil can retreat quickly. Service-cost inflation adds pressure, with Diamondback’s management expecting higher casing prices through the rest of 2026 and into 2027 as the Permian rig count grows.

Oil Producers Need Crude to Hold Its Gains

What comes next for Devon and Diamondback stock is whether crude holds above $100 while Middle East tensions linger. A retreat in the oil price could close the gap with the XOP exploration and production fund as quickly as it opened. Gasoline offers a consumer-side read, with the national average falling to $4.28 per gallon as of October 19 even as crude oil rallied.

Devon’s initial 2027 outlook, which management said would arrive in November, could show whether the combined company can turn higher prices into faster buybacks. Remaining buyback authorization at Devon stood at $7.8 billion after Q2, giving the company room to act on that plan.

Oil’s sharp swings this fall argue for investors keeping their new money in Devon and Diamondback shares measured, even with the rally intact. DVN, FANG, and OXY hareholders can leave room to add to their positions once the path of oil prices resolves.
