Is Energy Transfer (ET) Undervalued After Its 20th Straight Distribution Hike?

Published:

Dividend hike puts Energy Transfer in focus

Energy Transfer (ET) just raised its quarterly cash distribution on common units to US$0.3425, more than 3% above last year, ahead of its November earnings release and upcoming payout dates.

That higher payout comes as Energy Transfer units trade at US$20.72, with a 1-day share price return of 1.22% and a 7-day share price return of 4.07%. The 1-year total shareholder return of 33.60% and 5-year total shareholder return of 210.58% point to momentum that has built over time rather than faded on the latest dividend headline.

Spot 5 dividend fortresses that, like Energy Transfer, are putting cash returns to the forefront for income focused investors.

Energy Transfer now offers a richer cash payout at a unit price that still sits below both analyst targets and intrinsic estimates. Does that gap represent genuine value, or has the recent run already done most of the work?

On the most followed view, Energy Transfer is worth $24.58 against a last close of $20.72. This puts the richer distribution inside a broader thesis about contracted growth and fee based cash flows.

The secular resilience of natural gas usage in power generation is now reflected in Energy Transfer’s growing slate of interstate gas pipeline and storage projects in the Southwest and Southeast, including the upsized 48 inch Desert Southwest mainline and new Bethel storage cavern. These projects can support long duration throughput and fee based revenue growth as these assets enter service.

Result: Fair Value of $24.58 (UNDERVALUED)

Still, the Energy Transfer story can unravel if the record US$5.6b to US$5.9b 2026 capital plan strains leverage or if key pipelines face fresh permitting setbacks.

Find out about the key risks to this Energy Transfer narrative.

Another View on Energy Transfer’s valuation

On simple earnings multiples, Energy Transfer looks less clear cut. The units trade on a P/E of 14.1x, which is higher than the US Oil and Gas average of 12.5x but below a peer group at 18.4x and an estimated fair ratio of 22.2x. Is that middle ground a comfort zone or a warning that expectations are already loaded into the price?
