Here’s How Much a $1000 Investment in ConocoPhillips Made 10 Years Ago Would Be Worth Today

Published:

For most investors, how much a stock’s price changes over time is important. This factor can impact your investment portfolio as well as help you compare investment results across sectors and industries.

FOMO, or the fear of missing out, also plays a role in investing, particularly with tech giants and popular consumer-facing stocks.

What if you’d invested in ConocoPhillips (COP) ten years ago? It may not have been easy to hold on to COP for all that time, but if you did, how much would your investment be worth today?

ConocoPhillips’ Business In-Depth

With that in mind, let’s take a look at ConocoPhillips’ main business drivers.

Headquartered in Houston, TX, ConocoPhillips is primarily involved in the exploration and production of oil and natural gas. Considering proved reserves and production, the company is among the largest explorers and producers in the world. The company has a strong presence across conventional and unconventional plays in 15 countries. ConocoPhillips’ low-risk and cost-effective operations are spread across North America, Asia, Australia and Europe.

The company also has a foothold in Canada’s oil sands resources and has exposure to developments related to liquefied natural gas (LNG). As LNG continues to play a crucial role in meeting the demands of the energy transition, ConocoPhillips is expanding its worldwide footprint in the LNG market. Its LNG-related positions include Australia Pacific LNG, Port Arthur LNG and QatarEnergy LNG projects, including North Field East and North Field South.

The upstream energy company ended 2024 with proved reserves of around 7.8 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) and a reserve replacement ratio of 244%, along with a preliminary organic reserve replacement ratio of 123%. In 2025, the upstream energy player produced 2,375 thousand barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day, comprising more than 48.25% oil.

ConocoPhillips is strongly dedicated to returning cash to shareholders through dividend payments and share buybacks. In 2025, the company paid dividends of $4.0 billion and repurchased $5.0 billion worth of shares. In the second quarter of 2026, the company distributed $3.0 billion to shareholders, including $2.0 billion through share repurchases and $1.0 billion through the ordinary dividend.

The company ended the second quarter of 2026 with cash, restricted cash and short-term investments of $8.1 billion and long-term investments of $1.2 billion. At June 30, 2026, debt was $23.3 billion, compared with $23.4 billion at Dec. 31, 2025.

ConocoPhillips expects 2026 capital spending of $12-$12.5 billion, including incremental Permian activity. Full-year production is expected to be 2.295-2.325 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, reflecting Qatar-related uncertainty and a Surmont royalty-rate adjustment tied to higher oil prices.

Bottom Line

Putting together a successful investment portfolio takes a combination of research, patience, and a little bit of risk. For ConocoPhillips, if you bought shares a decade ago, you’re likely feeling really good about your investment today.

A $1000 investment made in October 2016 would be worth $3,630.24, or a gain of 263.02%, as of October 26, 2026, according to our calculations. This return excludes dividends but includes price appreciation.

The S&P 500 rose 256.05% and the price of gold increased 203.51% over the same time frame in comparison.

Looking ahead, analysts are expecting more upside for COP.

ConocoPhillips offers an attractive long-term profile supported by a deep low-cost shale inventory, expanding global LNG exposure and a broader portfolio of capital-efficient international opportunities. Record Permian output highlights the quality of its Lower 48 position, while LNG projects are expected to begin contributing in 2027. Willow remains on track for first oil in early 2029, with Alaska exploration adding resource optionality around existing infrastructure. Cost reductions are ahead of plan, shareholder distributions remain a priority and management continues to target a sizable free-cash-flow inflection by 2029. Portfolio high-grading adds flexibility. These drivers should lower future reinvestment needs, broaden cash-flow sources and support durable returns through the cycle, underpinning an Outperform view.

The stock has jumped 18.46% over the past four weeks. Additionally, no earnings estimate has gone lower in the past two months, compared to 5 higher, for fiscal 2026; the consensus estimate has moved up as well.
