GE Vernova, ATI Shares Soar—Show Me Earnings, Not Hype

Published:

Thirty-five years around the patch teaches you to read between the lines, and there’s precious little between these lines.

The story here: GE Vernova and ATI shares popped in an afternoon session as the broader market rallied ahead of a Federal Reserve rate decision and a heavy week of earnings. Morningstar noted roughly 36% of S&P 500 companies—concentrated in technology—had reported. That’s it. That’s the news.

Now, I’ve watched plenty of stocks levitate on macro beta rather than anything a petroleum engineer or energy investor would care about. A rate announcement lifts everything with a ticker, and turbines and specialty alloys ride the same tide. GE Vernova sells equipment to the power sector; ATI makes specialty materials, some of which end up in energy and aerospace supply chains. Neither move tells you a thing about order backlogs, margins, or the actual economics of the businesses.

Here’s my problem with “soaring” narratives: they conflate price action with value creation. A stock up 3% on Fed-week positioning hasn’t generated a dollar of free cash flow that it didn’t generate the day before. When I evaluate an energy-adjacent equipment maker, I want to know utilization rates, backlog conversion, contract pricing, and whether management’s delivery timelines survive contact with reality. An afternoon bounce answers none of that.

If you’re holding either name, this pop is noise. The earnings releases later this week are the signal—and even then, read the cash flow statement before the press release. Management teams are like wildcatters: they’ll tell you about the resource, never about the decline curve.

Until there’s an actual operating result worth discussing, this is a market moving, not a business improving. I’ll take numbers over headlines any day of the week.
