Kinder Morgan: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Published:

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 21, 2026, Kinder Morgan (KMI -1.42%) announced it had added $5.4 billion in new infrastructure projects to expand its natural gas network. The expansion pushes the company’s backlog (its portfolio of approved future construction projects) to an all-time high of $14.4 billion. That long-term visibility provides investors with predictable cash flow growth, backed by 20-year customer commitments. Three key takeaways from management’s presentation stand out for long-term investors.

1. Project Backlog Reaches $14.4 Billion With Major Expansion Additions

Management expanded its project pipeline by sanctioning two major joint ventures for natural gas transport. Demand for power generation drives these investments, and they carry an attractive project multiple of 5.7 times. That’s a favorable return profile for long-term capital.

We added $5.4 billion in new projects and placed $700 million of projects into service. The backlog multiple remains very attractive at 5.7x.
— Kim Dang, Chief Executive Officer

2. Long-Term Contracts Secure High-Quality Cash Flow Through 2032

The newly sanctioned projects rely on 20-year take-or-pay contracts (agreements requiring customers to pay whether or not they use capacity). These long-term commitments from investment-grade utilities and a high-credit technology customer extend visible growth well beyond 2025. It’s a structure that protects project returns against volume drops.

With Permian Link and Southeast Connector entering service between 2030 and 2032, we have meaningfully extended the period of high-quality cash flow growth supported by approved projects with long-term take-or-pay contracts.
— Kim Dang, Chief Executive Officer

3. Cash Flow Generation Supports Growth Capital Without Undue Debt

Kinder Morgan generates roughly $3 billion in annual cash flow available for growth capital expenditures (funds spent on long-term physical assets). This self-funding capability keeps financial leverage near 3.5 times while expanding EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) and EPS (earnings per share). It’s a disciplined strategy that funds expansion without overburdening the balance sheet.

Our strong cash flow allows us to build that infrastructure by using primarily our own cash without undue leverage. We are able to earn good returns from these investments, thus increasing our EBITDA and EPS in the years ahead.
— Rich Kinder, Executive Chairman

Looking Ahead

Natural gas demand is surging across electric power generation and export facilities, and executive leadership isn’t hiding its enthusiasm for long-term volume expansion.

The demand for natural gas is destined to dramatically increase both in America and the rest of the world in the coming years and even decades.
— Rich Kinder, Executive Chairman

An expansive pipeline network and extensive gas storage assets provide structural competitive advantages that lock in customer demand. Executive focus remains on capital discipline and project execution to convert approved developments into durable cash flow.

Simply put, we are delivering strong results today while continuing to build a longer runway for high-quality future growth.
— Kim Dang, Chief Executive Officer
