Ariel Investments, an investment management company, released its “Ariel Focus Fund” Q3 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The Fund declined during the third quarter of 2026 as higher interest rates, persistent inflation, rising energy prices, and geopolitical uncertainty created a challenging environment for value-oriented equities. The Fund’s Investor Class returned -1.26%, underperforming both the Russell 1000 Value Index, which gained 2.61%, and the S&P 500, which advanced 2.30%. Stronger oil prices, improved production, and disciplined capital allocation supported energy investments, while recurring subscription revenue and growing adoption of AI-enabled products helped an information-services holding. Elsewhere, a casino operator faced pressure from weaker Las Vegas tourism, while a dental-products manufacturer struggled with softer demand and cautious near-term guidance. The Fund acquired shares of a security, residential technology, and fire-safety distribution business following its separation from an existing holding, and it reported no position exits during the quarter. Looking ahead, Ariel expects continued volatility as inflation, monetary policy, and economic growth shape market conditions. The firm believes this environment can create opportunities to buy durable businesses at attractive prices, with a continued focus on intrinsic value, strong cash generation, and sustainable earnings rather than short-term market sentiment. Ariel Focus Fund stated the following regarding Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) in its Q3 2026 investor letter:
“Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) also jumped during the quarter as higher oil prices and stronger refining margins drove better-than-expected earnings and cash generation. Operational momentum remained robust, with record U.S. production fueled by contributions from Hess, the Permian Basin and the Gulf of America. The Hess integration has delivered stronger than expected synergies within a year of closing. The transaction has enhanced profitability and free cash flow beyond simply adding scale. Ongoing debt reduction, substantial dividends and share repurchases along with growing opportunities in exploration and natural gas power generation for data centers further bolstered investor confidence. We believe favorable commodity pricing, rising production, operational efficiencies and disciplined capital allocation highlight Chevron’s earnings power and long-term value creation potential.”
