What Happened?
Constellation Energy (CEG) announced a conditional loan commitment of up to $5 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Dominance Financing.
The money would fund nuclear uprates, which are projects that boost power output at existing plants.
The loan is not final as it depends on due diligence, signed financing documents, and other conditions. It also does not mean Constellation has decided to go ahead with every uprate.
Up to nine facilities could be covered, which include Braidwood, Byron, Clinton, Dresden, LaSalle, and Quad Cities in Illinois. Calvert Cliffs in Maryland and Limerick in Pennsylvania are also on the list.
The loan is part of the DOE’s UPRISE program, and the goal is to get more electricity from existing nuclear plants.
Private money is already flowing in as Constellation has deals with Google and Amazon worth more than $7 billion that add about 1,080 megawatts of nuclear capacity through 20-year contracts. A Meta deal supports a 30-megawatt expansion at Clinton.
