NEE Maintains Long-Term Earnings Growth Targets
Chief financial officer Michael Dunne reaffirmed NextEra’s 2026 adjusted earnings guidance of $3.92-$4.02 per share, with management targeting the upper end.
The company expects adjusted earnings per share to grow at least 8% annually through 2032 and at the same rate through 2035, based on 2025 results.
During questioning from Wolfe Research, Dunne clarified that fourth-quarter expectations incorporate El Nino-related wind generation of 90%-95% of the long-term average. Management maintained its confidence despite this anticipated headwind.
NextEra Expands Its Renewable Development Backlog
Chairman and CEO John Ketchum highlighted strong renewable energy and storage demand, with Energy Resources adding 3.7 gigawatts (GW) of projects during the quarter.
Battery storage represented 2.4 GW of additions, bringing the total development backlog to approximately 36.7 GW. Management highlighted opportunities involving standalone batteries, colocated storage and longer-duration systems.
Dunne reported that Energy Resources delivered approximately 13% year-over-year adjusted earnings growth. New investments and improved wind conditions supported results, although customer supply contributions and financing-related factors created offsets.
NEE Advances Data Center Power Opportunities
Ketchum outlined definitive agreements for three federal energy hubs totaling approximately 16.5 GW across Texas and Pennsylvania. These projects have secured $5.7 billion in initial funding year to date.
Under the arrangement, NextEra expects to earn development, construction and operating fees without committing project capital. Management indicated that the hubs could generate approximately half the adjusted earnings contribution associated with direct ownership over their first 20 operating years.
Responding to Jefferies, Dunne clarified that payments should remain relatively modest during 2026 and 2027 before increasing through 2032. This provides additional clarity on the timing of earnings contributions.
NextEra Defends Its Dominion Merger Proposal
Ketchum reiterated management’s commitment to completing the Dominion Energy combination during the second half of 2027. Shareholders approved the transaction in September.
The proposed combination would support adjusted earnings growth exceeding 9% annually through 2032. However, regulatory approvals remain critical, particularly in Virginia, where stakeholders have raised concerns about transaction conditions.
During questioning from Wolfe Research and Wells Fargo, Ketchum defended the proposed customer benefits, including approximately $2 billion in Virginia rate credits. He acknowledged opportunities for compromise during regulatory proceedings while emphasizing affordability, employment and clean energy development.
NEE Addresses Financing and Florida Demand
Dunne maintained projected equity financing requirements of approximately $12 billion-$17 billion through 2032. Management continues diversifying funding sources across international capital markets and institutional investors.
Responding to Barclays, Dunne emphasized that capital recycling is opportunistic rather than essential to financing requirements. NextEra generally prefers retaining attractive operating assets unless buyers offer compelling valuations.
At Florida Power & Light, President and CEO Scott Bores reiterated confidence in announcing a large-load agreement before year-end. Responding to Wells Fargo, he acknowledged that complex negotiations and local community engagement require time despite substantial customer interest.
NextEra Focuses on Execution Across Businesses
Management’s overall message centered on delivering generation and transmission infrastructure while maintaining affordability and financial discipline.
Ketchum emphasized diversified growth opportunities rather than dependence on individual technologies or projects. Regulatory approvals, construction execution and customer contracting remain central to achieving management’s stated objectives.
