ONEOK Yields 4.4%, Kinder Morgan 3.4%. Which Is the Better Dividend Stock?

Published:

Both pipeline giants go ex-dividend on the same date, but one carries a dividend cut on its record and the other carries more debt than it wants. Picking the wrong one could cost a retiree far more than the yield…

A retirement-focused investor may be wondering whether to own Kinder Morgan (NYSE:KMI | KMI Price Prediction) or ONEOK (NYSE:OKE) right now. The timing matters because both stocks go ex-dividend on November 2, 2026, with payment due November 16. To collect the next check, you have to own shares before the ex-dividend date. ONEOK yields 4.4% and Kinder Morgan yields 3.44%. That gap covers only the first of three tests.

Dividend Size and Growth: ONEOK Pays More and Raises Faster

ONEOK pays $1.07 per quarter, up from $1.03. That 4% raise, declared in January, puts the annual rate at $4.28. The payout sat at $0.935 through 2021 and 2022, and it has gone up every year since.

Kinder Morgan pays $0.2975 a quarter, or $1.19 annualized, which management called “an increase of 2% over 2025.” Its record still carries a mark. In 2016, the quarterly dividend fell from $0.51 to $0.125. The company has raised it every year since 2018, when it rose to $0.20, but today’s payout is still below its pre-cut level. Winner: ONEOK.

Dividend Safety: Kinder Morgan’s Balance Sheet Is Stronger

Kinder Morgan finished the third quarter with net debt at 3.5 times adjusted EBITDA. That compares with 3.8 times in January and is at “the low end of our targeted range.” So far this year, the company has generated $5.04 billion of operating cash flow and paid $1.98 billion in dividends. All three rating agencies now rate it BBB+.

ONEOK has moved quickly too. It paid off nearly $5.5B of debt principal in September and won BBB+ upgrades from S&P and Fitch. Even so, management still describes 3.5x debt to EBITDA as a target it is working toward, and it still has integration risk from the EnLink, Medallion and Brazos deals. Kinder Morgan has one catch of its own. Management warned that 2026 “is going to be a difficult year to replicate” after about $225 million from one-time items. Winner: Kinder Morgan.

Business Durability: Kinder Morgan’s Contracts Run Longer

Kinder Morgan says it moves roughly 40% of all natural gas in America, and about the same share of LNG feed gas. Its project backlog grew from $9.6 billion to $14.4 billion last quarter. Two of the largest projects, Southeast Connector and Permian Link, are backed by take-or-pay contracts of at least 20 years, and the Permian Link customer is an A-rated hyperscaler. Demand looks solid: the EIA expects U.S. LNG export capacity to reach 27.7 Bcf/d by 2030.

About 90% of ONEOK’s 2025 earnings were fee-based. But its NGL and crude volumes depend on how much producers drill, and its guidance assumes WTI at $55–$60/bbl. The stocks’ betas show the difference: Kinder Morgan at 0.583 and ONEOK at 0.798. Winner: Kinder Morgan.

Verdict: Kinder Morgan Is the Retirement Pick

ONEOK has the stronger case on price and past returns. The shares trade at 16 times forward earnings against 22 for Kinder Morgan, and the stock has gained 261.6% over 10 years versus 175.76%. The CFO also expects “our EPS growth rate should exceed that EBITDA growth rate.” Investors still a decade or more from retirement, who can ride out swings in drilling activity, will find ONEOK the better investment.

A retiree living on the quarterly check should think differently. Kinder Morgan wins two of the three tests, and both of those are about whether the dividend keeps arriving (the whole point of a dividend ladder built so you never have to sell a share, which we laid out in a free guide here: Never Touch the Principal). Over the next year, track whether Kinder Morgan’s earnings hold up without the 2026 one-time items, and whether ONEOK’s debt reaches its target.

Winner: Kinder Morgan, because retirement income is only as safe as the balance sheet and contracts behind it.
