Phillips 66: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Published:

On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 28, 2026, Phillips 66 (PSX +1.95%) reported $5.6 billion in earnings alongside high refining utilization rates. The enterprise is transforming steady midstream fees into growing payouts, so it doesn’t need to rely solely on volatile refining margins. Three insights from management clarify the long-term investment picture.

1. Heavy Canadian Crude Processing Powers Refining Profitability

The company processes heavy Canadian crude oil across its refining network at wider profit margins than competitors paying for lighter grades. Every $1-per-barrel widening in heavy crude price discounts adds $140 million to corporate earnings.

Canadian crude is currently favored. And we import more Canadian crude into the U.S. than any other company.
— Brian Mandell, Marketing, Commercial, and Renewable Fuels

2. Midstream Fee Expansion Secures Long-Term Dividend Growth

Reliable fee revenues from gathering and processing, the pipeline infrastructure moving raw gas and liquids, anchor corporate cash flow. Management expects midstream earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) to grow 5% annually, easily supporting the $2 billion annual dividend outlay.

Midstream’s currently $4 billion per year of EBITDA growing at about 5% per year. And you think about the magnitude of that growth and then you look at the current dividend, there is a $2 billion per year outlay.
— Kevin J. Mitchell, CFO

3. Aggressive Debt Paydown Unlocks Share Repurchase Capacity

Management paid off $2 billion in debt during the quarter. It reached its 2027 leverage targets ahead of schedule, reducing interest expenses and leaving more cash available for share buybacks.

During the quarter, we reduced debt by $2 billion by paying off the remaining balance of the March 2027 term loan and through open market purchases of debt.
— Kevin J. Mitchell, CFO

Looking Ahead

Refining utilization and global fuel consumption remain high, creating favorable conditions for domestic refiners with locked-in shipping costs. Strategic investments in time-chartered shipping vessels insulate refining operations from spot transportation rate spikes while supporting market capture.

Overall, though, I think demand’s holding up well, and the response in demand is not enough to balance the market. So we expect the market to remain strong for the foreseeable future.
— Brian Mandell, Marketing, Commercial, and Renewable Fuels

Expansion projects across natural gas liquids infrastructure position the business to generate steady earnings growth through economic cycles.

Through these midstream projects, we are positioned to achieve our stated targets and deliver mid-single-digit adjusted EBITDA growth through the decade.
