This Is Why MPC Stock Is a Smart Buy Before Q3 Earnings Release

Published:

Marathon Petroleum Corporation MPC is slated to release third-quarter 2026 results on Nov. 3, before market open.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for revenues is pegged at $33.6 billion, implying a decrease of 6.4% from the year-ago quarter. The consensus earnings mark of $25.74 per share has been revised upward by 11.2% over the past 30 days, suggesting a 755.2% jump from the year-ago reported number.

Q3 Earnings Whispers for Marathon Petroleum

The proven Zacks model does not conclusively show that Marathon Petroleum is likely to beat estimates in the third quarter of 2026. The combination of a positive Earnings ESP and a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), 2 (Buy) or 3 (Hold) increases the chances of beating estimates. But that’s not the case here.

You can uncover the best stocks to buy or sell before they’re reported with our Earnings ESP Filter.

Earnings ESP: MPC has an Earnings ESP of 0.00%. This is because the Most Accurate Estimate and the Zacks Consensus Estimate are pegged at $25.74 per share each.

Zacks Rank: Marathon Petroleum currently carries a Zacks Rank #1, which increases the predictive power of ESP. However, the company’s 0.00% ESP makes surprise prediction difficult this earnings season.

Factors Shaping MPC’s Upcoming Q3 Results

Stronger refining margins are likely to support Marathon Petroleum’s third-quarter 2026 earnings. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for refining and marketing margin stands at $44.76 per barrel versus $17.60 reported a year earlier. On its August earnings call, management highlighted global refinery outages and tight fuel inventories, alongside healthy domestic and export demand. These conditions could have supported product prices. Access to cheaper crude and yield improvements completed during the second quarter at Robinson and El Paso could strengthen profitability, helping Marathon produce more valuable fuels and benefit from the favorable market.

Midstream expansion and favorable renewable diesel conditions may lift third-quarter earnings. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Marathon Petroleum’s midstream revenues is $3.2 billion, while the consensus mark for renewable diesel revenues is $1.2 billion. Harmon Creek III was scheduled to begin operations in August, adding processing capacity, while April’s Secretariat I startup could have supported midstream throughput. In renewable diesel, the completion of Martinez maintenance in the first quarter improved operating availability. Better feedstock selection and stronger regulatory credit values likely supported profitability, with management expecting favorable conditions through the remainder of 2026.

Planned refinery maintenance could weigh on Marathon Petroleum’s third-quarter earnings, even with stronger expected refining margins. Management forecast $290 million in maintenance costs, mainly at Gulf Coast and Mid-Continent facilities. The work likely reduced its ability to convert lower-value products into more profitable fuels. Seasonal pressures could also limit earnings. Building inventories before hurricane season and weaker prices for refining byproducts have historically reduced third-quarter profitability. Meanwhile, the price gap between jet fuel and diesel narrowed early in the quarter, potentially reducing the extra profit Marathon earned from producing more jet fuel.

Tight Fuel Supplies Support Refining Earnings Outlook

The refining industry’s third-quarter earnings picture looks healthy, with tight fuel supplies continuing to support profitability. Phillips 66‘s PSX latest call highlighted roughly 7 million barrels per day of refining capacity offline across Russia, Asia and the Middle East. Low inventories and disrupted trade flows suggest that supply pressures could persist beyond the reporting season. This supports PBF Energy‘s PBF earlier view that inventories could take well into 2027 to normalize. For U.S. refiners, the need to replenish stocks could help sustain attractive margins even after summer fuel demand eases.

Strong operations are also helping refiners turn favorable markets into earnings. Phillips 66 reported third-quarter refinery utilization of 98% and a record third-quarter distillate yield of 41%, showing how reliable plants can benefit from strong diesel economics. Access to cheaper U.S. crude, flexible sourcing and efficient shipping arrangements provide additional advantages when global trade routes are disrupted. Across the industry, these strengths could help protect profitability against higher freight costs, while seasonal winter diesel demand and blending opportunities offer further support heading into the fourth quarter.

Demand remains a risk, although the latest commentary suggests that softer consumption has not been enough to ease supply shortages. U.S. gasoline and diesel demand were reported down about 2.5% and 1.5%, respectively, yet management remained positive on margins through much of 2027. Operational performance will still separate winners from weaker performers. PBF Energy’s previously scheduled Martinez maintenance illustrates how downtime can limit benefits from strong markets. Investors should therefore assess both earnings delivery and whether cash generation supports debt reduction and shareholder returns.

How Should You Play MPC Pre-Q3 Earnings?

Investors could consider gradually adding Marathon Petroleum shares ahead of its third-quarter earnings release. Upward earnings estimate revisions, stronger expected refining margins and growth in midstream operations support a favorable outlook. The stock’s discount to industry valuations adds appeal despite its recent rally. Maintenance costs and a neutral Earnings ESP warrant some caution, as an e
