Investing.com — ExxonMobil and Chevron have canceled plans for their executives to travel to the United Arab Emirates for the ADIPEC oil conference next week due to security concerns, Reuters reported Thursday citing people familiar with the matters.
Exxon Chief Executive Darren Woods was scheduled to attend the Abu Dhabi conference, while Chevron planned to send its upstream president, Clay Neff, the report said.
Oil markets have been affected by concerns about potential US attacks on Iran and possible retaliatory strikes by Tehran. US President Donald Trump said he would not launch an attack on Iran before the US midterm election on November 3, but on Friday stated the US may carry out another military operation against Iran.
The UAE has not experienced attacks from Iran since May.
The conference’s online program still shows other senior executives scheduled to attend, including BP CEO Meg O’Neill and Equinor CEO Anders Opedal.
The US State Department last week ordered some diplomats to leave Saudi Arabia, which has faced near daily attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis this month. US officials also told Reuters the government plans to withdraw family members from several other US missions in the region.
ADIPEC is not the first energy conference affected by regional tensions. Earlier this month, several senior energy executives were removed from the schedule of the WPC Energy Congress in Riyadh. That conference proceeded despite deadly attacks on the Saudi capital claimed by the Houthis.
