Quanta Services (PWR) Stock Cools As Q3 Earnings Reset The Debate

Published:

Quanta Services stock slipped about 2% in regular trading, even though the company reported one of its strongest quarters on record for Q3 2026. The market focused on the price move. The business delivered a different story.

Revenue reached about US$12.0b and adjusted earnings per share came in at US$6.06, both quarterly highs for this grid and infrastructure contractor. Management also lifted full year guidance across sales, profit and free cash flow. Short term traders saw a red screen. Long term investors saw a balance sheet, backlog and earnings profile that may warrant a fresh valuation lens.

Quanta Services: Backlog Execution Starts To Show Up

Bulls argue Quanta Services must turn its AI and grid heavy pipeline into sturdier profitability and cash. That ambition is explicit.

“Quanta Services needs its shift from contractor to integrated solutions and manufacturing partner, supported by large scale craft labor, off site fabrication and disciplined capital allocation, to continue translating record backlog and raised 2026 guidance into durable margins and free cash flow.”

Q3 results give this view tangible footing. Record adjusted EPS, record free cash flow of about US$1.2b and a backlog near US$64b, plus higher full year revenue, profit and cash guidance, all point to execution on that mix shift rather than just headline order intake.

Quanta Services: Bear Margins Thesis Meets Early Evidence

Bearish voices argue Quanta Services could see its self perform model undermined by rising complexity and fixed costs.

“Quanta Services is deploying $500 to $700m to double power transformer capacity and expand off site manufacturing to around 6.7 to 7 million square feet. However, these vertical supply and manufacturing moves increase fixed costs and execution complexity. If data center and grid customers do not award enough higher margin work to absorb this footprint, returns on invested capital and earnings growth could fall short.”

This quarter did not show that strain. Adjusted EBITDA margin around 10.7% guidance, record free cash flow and a backlog rising to about US$64b imply the new manufacturing footprint is at least being absorbed for now, even if long term returns still need proving.

Find Dislocations Before They Close

Quanta Services just showed how a strong quarter can sit beside a softer share price. The real opportunity could be in companies where fundamentals and valuations have not yet fully aligned.

  • Company 1 – 30% below our estimate – refocuses on AI centric networking and data infrastructure to grow recurring, higher margin service contracts.

  • Company 2 – 29% below our estimate – scales a digital banking platform as revenue per active customer and efficiency reshape unit economics.

  • Company 3 – 35% below our estimate – tightens its grip on the AI compute stack as data centre customers adopt high density GPU racks and software ecosystems.
