Targa Resources (TRGP) Builds Out Export Capacity, Is The Stock Fully Valued?

Published:

Targa Resources (TRGP) has drawn fresh attention after a recent share price move, with the stock last closing at US$314.99. The shift has investors revisiting how its midstream energy profile lines up with current market expectations.

The recent 1-month share price return of 11.8% and 90-day gain of 19.04% suggest momentum in Targa Resources is building. In addition, the 1-year total shareholder return of 108.34% and 5-year total shareholder return above 5x highlight the strength of the longer term.

Scan other midstream and energy infrastructure plays showing similar momentum by checking a curated set of 30 high quality undervalued stocks alongside Targa Resources.

Targa Resources now trades only modestly below the average analyst target, while internal models imply a much wider discount. Where does fair value for this midstream giant realistically land after the recent surge?

Against the last close at $314.99, the most followed narrative pegs fair value for Targa Resources at $325.14, leaving a small theoretical upside that rests heavily on execution of its Permian and export build out.

Substantial investment in integrated export and fractionation infrastructure is progressing, with Train 11 in service and Trains 12 and 13 under construction. The Delaware Express NGL pipeline is online and an LPG export expansion to around 19 million barrels per month is on track for the third quarter of 2027. This increases operating leverage and can support higher earnings and margins as contracted volumes flow through the system.

Still, a heavy slate of growth projects and the risk of overbuilt Permian and Gulf Coast capacity could pressure Targa Resources margins if demand does not fully materialize.

Another View: Targa Resources Through The P/E Lens

The SWS DCF model flags Targa Resources as undervalued, yet the P/E picture tells a very different story. At 29.9x earnings versus a US Oil and Gas industry average of 12.6x and a fair ratio of 23.1x, the stock looks expensive, raising the question of how much optimism is already in the price.

For investors weighing these mixed signals, it can help to see how current valuation compares to the earnings profile and what would need to change for the market to move closer to that fair ratio. See what the numbers say about this price — find out in our valuation breakdown.
