Suncor Profit More Than Doubles as Cash Flow Hits Record High

Published:

Canadian integrated oil producer Suncor Energy reported a sharp increase in third-quarter earnings on Tuesday, supported by stronger crude oil prices, improved refining margins, and higher-value export sales.

The Calgary-based company posted net earnings of C$3.81 billion, or C$3.27 per share, for the third quarter of 2026, compared with C$1.62 billion, or C$1.34 per share, a year earlier.

Adjusted operating earnings climbed to C$4.63 billion from C$1.79 billion in the same quarter last year, while adjusted funds from operations surged 75% to a quarterly record of C$6.71 billion.

Suncor also generated record free funds flow of C$5.20 billion, more than double the C$2.35 billion reported a year earlier. Both adjusted funds from operations and free funds flow are non-GAAP measures.

The stronger financial performance reflected higher upstream price realizations, improved refining margins, and increased sales into higher-value international markets, partially offset by higher royalties and taxes.

Suncor’s total upstream production averaged 852,500 barrels per day (bpd), down approximately 2% from 870,000 bpd in the third quarter of 2025, but up from 760,900 bpd in the preceding quarter.

Oil sands production averaged 788,500 bpd, compared with 812,200 bpd a year earlier, as increased maintenance at Syncrude weighed on output. Record third-quarter production at Firebag partially offset the decline.

Meanwhile, refinery throughput averaged 487,700 bpd, with utilization reaching 95%, compared with 96% a year earlier.

Refined product sales climbed to a third-quarter record of 676,900 bpd, up from 646,800 bpd in the corresponding period of 2025, supported by expanded export capacity and stronger domestic sales.

Strong cash generation allowed Suncor to return more than C$2 billion to shareholders during the quarter, including nearly C$1.4 billion in share repurchases and approximately C$700 million in dividends.

Following the quarter, Suncor increased its planned monthly share repurchases by 50% to C$750 million, beginning in October, and now expects total buybacks of C$5.5 billion in 2026.

The company also approved a 10% increase in its quarterly dividend to C$0.66 per share.

Suncor’s net debt declined to C$1.75 billion at the end of September, compared with C$7.15 billion a year earlier, further strengthening its balance sheet.

Separately, Suncor announced an agreement to divest its interests in the Terra Nova, White Rose, and West White Rose offshore oil developments for C$1.2 billion, with potential additional payments of up to C$350 million linked to future oil prices.

The transaction would also transfer associated future investment commitments and liabilities to the buyer, including an estimated C$1.4 billion in abandonment and lease liabilities.

The assets contributed approximately 17,000 bpd of production during the first nine months of 2026. The transaction is expected to close in early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other conditions.

Despite the planned divestiture and year-over-year decline in upstream production, Suncor maintained its previously updated 2026 corporate guidance, reflecting continued confidence in its integrated oil sands and refining operations.
