SLB and Shearwater Kick Off Multi-Client 3D Seismic Campaign Offshore Brazil
SLB and seismic acquisition specialist Shearwater GeoServices have started a new multi-client 3D seismic survey in Brazilian offshore waters, according to a report from Brazil Energy Insight. Multi-client surveys are shot speculatively and the resulting data is later licensed to multiple exploration and production companies, allowing operators to screen acreage without funding dedicated acquisition programs of their own.
The survey adds to the substantial library of seismic coverage already gathered across Brazil’s prolific sedimentary basins, including the pre-salt play along the country’s southeastern continental shelf, where thick salt layers sit above deepwater reservoirs and require advanced imaging technology to map accurately. Modern 3D seismic acquisition uses vessels towing streamers that record sound-wave reflections from subsurface rock formations, giving geoscientists a picture of potential hydrocarbon traps before drilling.
Multi-client work is a mainstay of SLB’s portfolio through itsSLB-branded data services, and the company has long been an active player in Latin American exploration data markets. Shearwater, a dedicated geophysical survey operator, contributes vessel capacity and acquisition expertise. For both firms, revenue from such campaigns typically arrives over time as energy companies license the processed data.
Shares of SLB were trading at $57.10 in the latest session, up 0.18% from a previous close of $57.00, valuing the oilfield services giant at roughly $84.7 billion. The move roughly tracked broader market trading, with no significant reaction attributable to the survey announcement.
Brazil remains one of the most active deepwater exploration regions globally, sustained by production-sharing and concession rounds as well as ongoing appraisal and development drilling by operators including Petrobras and international majors. Continued seismic investment signals sustained interest in subsurface data to support exploration decisions in the basin, where deepwater wells carry high costs and detailed imaging can materially reduce drilling risk.
The announcement did not disclose the survey’s exact area, water depths, or timeline for data delivery — details typically released once processing and licensing schedules are finalized.
What to watch
- Details on the survey’s size, duration, and target basins as SLB and Shearwater release further specifications.
- Milestones in data acquisition and processing, which often precede licensing agreements with E&P companies.
- SLB’s upcoming quarterly earnings report, where management commentary on Latin American multi-client activity may provide context.
- Brazil’s regulatory calendar, including future exploration block offerings that can drive demand for seismic data.
