EIA Lifts 2027 U.S. Crude Output Outlook as Production Climbs Toward New Records

The U.S. Energy Information Administration has again nudged higher its outlook for domestic crude production, now projecting 14.3 million barrels per day (bpd) for 2027 in its latest forecast cycle. That marks an upward revision from 14.2 million bpd in August and 14.0 million bpd in July, according to the agency’s most recent projections.

The 2026 outlook remains steady at 13.8 million bpd, unchanged across the agency’s July and August forecasts. Both years’ figures would surpass the current record of 13.7 million bpd set in 2025, underscoring expectations that U.S. upstream output — production from domestic exploration and drilling activity — will continue grinding higher despite a maturing resource base.

The trajectory so far this year supports that view. U.S. crude production averaged 13.7 million bpd during the first half of 2025, a gain of roughly 300,000 bpd, or 2%, versus the same stretch last year. The EIA attributed most of that growth to the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico, the country’s most prolific shale play, along with the U.S. portion of the Gulf of Mexico, where deepwater projects have been ramping up.

Companies anchored in the Permian stand to be directly affected by the forecast revisions. Permian Resources (PR) — which trades at $23.65, up 0.28% today from a prior close of $23.58, with a market capitalization near $19.8 billion — is among the producers whose output plans feed into the basin-wide trend the EIA tracks.

The steady upward revisions, while incremental at 100,000 bpd per month, signal that federal forecasters see U.S. supply growth holding firm into the latter half of the decade. Sustained output at these levels has implications across the value chain: midstream operators that move crude via pipelines, and downstream refiners that process it, all calibrate capacity decisions against production outlooks of this kind.

Still, the agency’s own data shows the pace of growth is moderating. A 2% year-over-year increase in first-half production is a slower clip than the surges of prior shale booms, reflecting discipline in drilling activity and the natural maturity of core acreage. Whether 2027 output lands at or above the newly raised 14.3 million bpd figure will depend on oil prices, drilling economics, and basin-level efficiency gains over the next two years.

What to watch

  • Upcoming EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook updates for further 2026 and 2027 production revisions.
  • Weekly EIA crude production estimates and rig-count data as indicators of near-term momentum.
  • Quarterly results from Permian-focused producers, including Permian Resources, for capital-spending and output guidance.
