SLB Begins 3D Seismic Acquisition Campaign Along Brazil’s Equatorial Margin

SLB, the Houston-based oilfield services provider, has started a new 3D seismic survey offshore Brazil’s Equatorial Margin, one of the most closely followed exploration frontiers in the global upstream sector. The campaign is designed to give oil companies detailed subsurface imaging ahead of potential drilling decisions in the region.

Seismic surveys of this kind are typically a precursor to exploration activity: geophysical vessels tow sound sources and sensor arrays to map rock layers thousands of meters below the seabed. The resulting 3D data helps operators identify prospects and reduce the risk — and cost — of exploratory wells. The Equatorial Margin, stretching along Brazil’s northern coast, has drawn growing operator interest as companies assess plays that geologists compare to the prolific petroleum systems of West Africa’s conjugate margin.

The survey also underscores SLB’s positioning across the exploration data value chain, where the company earns revenue not only from drilling services but also from geoscience acquisition and interpretation work performed ahead of the development cycle.

In trading on Friday, shares of SLB were changing hands at $57.10, up 0.18% from the prior close of $57.00, valuing the company at roughly $84.7 billion. The stock’s modest move suggests investors have so far reacted cautiously to exploration-stage news flow, which often takes quarters or years to translate into contracted work.

For Brazil, expanded seismic coverage along the northern offshore could shape the pace of future leasing and exploration activity in the basin, which remains at an earlier stage of evaluation than the country’s established pre-salt province in the southeast Atlantic.

What to watch

  • SLB’s next quarterly earnings report, including commentary on exploration data revenue and offshore activity trends.
  • Updates on the survey’s completion timeline and any disclosed commitments from operator clients.
  • Brazilian regulatory and leasing developments affecting Equatorial Margin exploration activity.
  • Further announcements from competitors in the seismic acquisition space operating in the same basins.
