Qatar’s state energy company aims to sign additional contracts in the coming months to purchase 3 million to 6 million tons of LNG annually, according to one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private. The moves follow Qatar’s recent agreements with Cheniere Energy Inc. and Woodside Energy Group Ltd. to buy 7 million tons of LNG a year combined from the two firms.
Qatar was the world’s second-largest supplier of LNG before the Iran war, but its massive fuel export complex was damaged in March attacks, and many of its cargoes have been trapped behind the Strait of Hormuz. The Mideast nation is now pushing to diversify its supplies outside the Persian Gulf in the wake of the ongoing conflict and use the fuel to expand its trading operations.
QatarEnergy, already the top buyer of US LNG, did not immediately respond to request for comment.
The company is also in talks with US suppliers Venture Global Inc. and the developer of the Kimmeridge Energy Management-backed Commonwealth LNG project, the people said.
Reuters previously reported the Qatar-Venture Global talks.
Venture Global declined to comment. A spokesperson for Commonwealth LNG did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
